Young Man Dies After Pickup Truck Fails to Yield at Stop Sign, Officials Say

KINSMAN, Ill. — A quiet Wednesday morning in rural Grundy County turned tragic after 23-year-old Carlin J. McGarvey was killed in a violent two-vehicle crash near Kinsman, leaving family, friends, and the community mourning a sudden and devastating loss.

According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 7:09 a.m. on May 13, 2026, to the intersection of Kinsman Road and Prairie Road following reports of a serious crash involving injuries. When emergency crews arrived, they encountered a severe scene with heavy vehicle damage and debris scattered across the roadway. Officials said one driver had been ejected, prompting an immediate multi-agency emergency response.

Investigators said McGarvey was driving a red 2002 Ford Ranger eastbound on Prairie Road approaching the intersection, while a 2013 Ford Escape driven by a 22-year-old woman from Kinsman was traveling northbound. Authorities believe the pickup truck failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering the intersection.

The impact was described as catastrophic. Officials said the Ford Escape struck the passenger side of the pickup, causing it to overturn. McGarvey, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected during the rollover.

Emergency crews from multiple departments responded quickly and transported McGarvey to Morris Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His death was confirmed by the Grundy County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and declined further medical treatment at the scene. Authorities said the crash remains under investigation by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit and the coroner’s office.

As the investigation continues, loved ones are remembering Carlin J. McGarvey as a young man full of promise whose life was tragically cut short.
