Teenager Dies in Late-Night Shooting on 17th Street S.W. in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Heartbreak and sorrow have swept through southwest Birmingham following the tragic death of 17-year-old Destiny Lawson, whose life was cut short in a late-night shooting Tuesday.

The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. at a duplex in the 100 block of 17th Street S.W., leaving family members, friends, and neighbors struggling to process the sudden loss of a young life full of promise.

According to authorities, West Precinct officers responded after receiving reports of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found Destiny Lawson unresponsive inside the residence. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service crews attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said preliminary findings suggest the shooting may have been accidental. Sgt. LaQuitta Wade stated that Destiny was visiting the residence and was inside with several individuals when the incident occurred. Authorities believe a firearm was being handled when it discharged, striking the teenager. The person believed to have fired the shot reportedly fled the scene before police arrived.

Several individuals who remained at the residence have since cooperated with investigators and were taken in for questioning as detectives work to determine exactly what led to the shooting.

Outside the home, family members gathered as authorities confirmed Destiny’s death, creating scenes of deep grief and disbelief as loved ones came to terms with the loss.
