Foggy Morning Turns Deadly: 26-Year-Old Killed in Orangeburg County Crash

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A 26-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning after a vehicle collision at an Orangeburg County intersection, with officials warning motorists about dangerous visibility caused by heavy fog.
According to the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office, the crash happened at approximately 5:50 a.m. on September 30, 2026, at the intersection of Five Chop Road (U.S. Highway 301) and Way Road in the Santee area.
The victim was identified as Zachary M. Herron, 26, of Elloree, South Carolina. He was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision.
Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle said weather conditions appeared to have played a role in the deadly crash, noting that the area was experiencing very foggy conditions at the time.
“Extreme caution” was urged for drivers traveling in fog, particularly when approaching intersections where visibility can become severely limited.
Fog can make it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles, pedestrians, road signs and intersections until they are dangerously close. Officials are reminding motorists to slow down, increase following distances and remain especially alert whenever visibility is reduced.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Authorities have not released additional details about the crash at this time.
For the family and loved ones of Zachary Herron, Wednesday morning brought an unimaginable loss. A journey that began like any other ended in tragedy, leaving a community mourning a life lost far too soon.
