The community of Sidon and loved ones across Leflore County, Mississippi, are mourning the loss of 21-year-old Jamildrick Hancock, who was killed in a shooting Wednesday afternoon along U.S. Highway 49 South, just past the Double Quick gas station.
Authorities said the incident occurred shortly before 1:00 p.m., while Hancock was traveling home from work. Investigators reported that a vehicle pulled up behind him near the gas station and opened fire into his car. His vehicle then left the roadway and came to rest just beyond the station.
Emergency responders arrived quickly after the shooting was reported, but Hancock was pronounced deceased at the scene from his injuries.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is handling the case. Officials confirmed the shooting is being investigated as a homicide. At this time, no arrests have been made, and no suspect information has been released as investigators continue to gather evidence.
Family, friends, and members of the Sidon community say they are heartbroken over Hancock’s sudden and violent death. He is being remembered as a hardworking young man who was focused on his future and was simply on his way home when his life was taken.
The shooting marks Leflore County’s first reported homicide of the year and has left many residents shaken as they process the loss.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact law enforcement as the investigation remains ongoing.
