A Sidon man is dead following a shooting Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 49 South, just past the Double Quick gas station, according to investigators.
Authorities identified the victim as 21-year-old Jamildrick Hancock.
The shooting happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. Investigators said Hancock had just left work and was traveling home when the incident occurred. According to early findings, a vehicle pulled up behind Hancock’s car near the gas station, and shots were fired into his vehicle. His car then left the roadway and came to rest just past the station.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and found Hancock suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Law enforcement officials said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has taken over the case and is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
At this time, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released information regarding a possible suspect or motive. Investigators continue to gather evidence and review details from the scene to determine exactly what led to the deadly encounter.
The shooting marks Leflore County’s first reported homicide of the year.
Officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information related to the case to contact law enforcement as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
